Comments: Hi!! Just a note to say my chinchilla went for his anesteitic and has come round. He went today at 9 and came home at 6. he had a few shards on his teeth and a small abcess at the back of his mouth. He is slightly dazed at the moment and is slepping on his side. He is on anti biotics and has special food and water. Thanks for your amazin website or we wouldnt of even of thought of his teeth.
Admin reply: It's been a long day for him, poor thing. I'm pleased you have got him home safely and I hope he will soon be back to normal. I expect the vet gave you Science Recovery? His mouth will be a little sore. If he is reluctant to eat tomorrow try offering it on a spoon and if he won't eat it that way, you might need to syringe the food into his mouth. Comments: My chinchilla is around 11 years old and he has just started losing weight and drooling he went to the vets and he said it probably is his teeth but will have to have an anestetic but being so old do you think he will pull through
Admin reply: I am sorry that your chinchilla is not so well - it does sound as if it is a tooth problem, those are classic symptoms. I have known older chins have anaesthetics.
Anaesthetising any small animal is always a risk. Usually, the vet will give a chinnie a small whif of gas and work quickly so as not to keep him under for long. They need to be sedated for the vet to look properly as they have very small mouths.
He may have a sore mouth and be in some pain. It depends what the vet finds when he looks. If it is just a spike that need filing, hopefully he will be fine afterwards. But it could be more than just this - he won't know until he sees inside his mouth - he might also take an xray, to make sure there is nothing else going on that he can't see. Ultimately the decision is yours, but I don't think you have a choice really. You can't leave him the way he is. You said he is losing weight - are you managing to get food into him.
